Working of 5G - Pros and Cons:
5G, it is the fifth generation of communication networks. It would replace 4G LTE due to the prominence that the Internet of Things technology is going to get in the near future. 5G uses six different innovations in this field to work. Well-connected and interacting devices sound pretty
cool, right? if you receive a mail and your washing machine actually decides to
notify you? Or what if you can test your air conditioner to turn itself on and

including television, mobile phones, radios, all of these work on radio waves
in the electromagnetic spectrum having the frequency between 3 kHz and 6GHz.
There is only having a limited number of bands that
can be used and, the first innovation the millimeter waves come into play.
The ideology here is simple and that is to open up the higher end of the spectrum
from 6 GHz onwards for usage. there
are big disadvantages of these high-frequency waves and it is the fact that
these waves can't travel for longer distances but the waves that we used
in present-day having the ability to travel long-distance in communication.
This is due to high scattering, buildings and trees might obstruct these waves.
Here the phenomenon of rain fade occurs which means
that millimeter waves can be faded by rain. This is where our second
innovation called small-cell networks comes into play. in this, along
with the main tower, we have to install a lot of smaller base stations that
would act as a booster to these signals. A lot of times we require connections
to be more concentrated in one place than the other like a cricket match or a
Mobile World Congress.

This would mean two things: the higher the capacity
that the tower should have and the lesser interference that the wave should
do. This is where massive MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) and 3D
beamforming helps. With the help of MIMO technology, the number of
antennas in a tower can be increased up to 256 nodes and 3D beam-forming
technology helps to transmit waves in multiple directions by reducing
interference.
The final two innovations are called network
slicing and full-duplex. The full-duplex system helps out in overcoming
the problem of reciprocity of antennas, in which antennas can send or
receive data simultaneously rather than taking turns as it does with the
current technology. Network slicing is a way by which we can create separate
wireless networks on the cloud to allowing users to create personalized
internet experience. It has lots of technicalities, but when you actually
get 5G?
In North America South Korea and Japan, there is already a handful
of places in which you can get 5G. For the rest of the world including
India2020 is the expected year. So with phones like the Galaxy S10 (5G),
the Moto Z5, the One plus 5G, and LG V50 thinQ, already being announced, us
experiencing 5G is not pretty far in the future.
Now let’s, first of all, we talk about the Cons of the 5g-
First of all the infrastructure hurdles. the infrastructure
needed for 5G is far more costly and difficult to install. It would require
new towers supporting massive MIMO, additional base stations, and new devices
supporting 5G technology. This process is going to be slow and will
be introduced heterogeneously across different regions because of the
different regulations existing in every region.
The second one is Bulky and uncomfortable devices.
The current LTE phones will obviously not support 5G because millimeter
waves and the device which does support 5G needs more than one antenna.
In practice, the devices which do support 5G need four to five antennas
and a modem that supports 5G like the X50 from Qualcomm which would make
the device bulky and uncomfortable for usage.
The third one is the Cost of 5G. The initial
devices and data plans for 5G are going to be extremely costly. Even
though, that is how it is for any new technology, with smartphones already costing
close to a thousand dollars, increasing it further puts it out of reach for
even premium users.
The fourth one is the Environmental impact. This is a
debated topic and there are research topics that prove it and disprove it. There
are studies that show that there is a significant impact done by millimeter
waves in the health of birds and other animals. It also talks about the ecological
imbalance that 5G will bring.
The fifth one is Health issues caused by 5G. This
is a highly controversial and highly debated topic and at the same time
one of the most important. Typically, those radio waves which have a
frequency of around 70 million gear Hertz or more are called ionizing radiation.
Ionizing radiation has the power for knocking of electrons from the human
body thus causing DNA damage and eventually leading to cancer.
The waves that are going to be used for 5G have a mere
60 GHz which would mean that it is a million times less powerful than
ionizing radiation. That means if 5G waves cause cancer, so should visible
light. But, none of these studies are conclusive, and as intelligent people
would say, "Absence of evidence doesn't mean the evidence of
absence"! So will 5G affect our health? The true answer is "We don't
know yet"!
Now let’s talk about the Pros of the 5g-
It is the most obvious one the speed. With 3G
you will be able to download an average history movie in about 25
hours and with 4G it would be less than 10 minutes and
finally, with 5G it would be less than four seconds. The
theoretical maximum speed with 5G would be 20 Gigabits per second which is
20 times faster than Google Fiber!
so you will be able to burn your 3 GB of data plan within 8 seconds.
The reduced latency.
Perhaps more important than speed, 5G solves the problem of latency which is
the delay between commands and responses from the server. This is also
called response time and scientists are working on Low Earth Orbit
satellites which are also called LEOs which can help us achieve this. 5G
would have 50 times faster response time than 4G which will very helpful
for machinery like self-driving cars. Even more important is in the health
field where a doctor can perform real-time surgeries because the latency is
pretty low.
Efficient and uniform platform.
With the help of 5G, all the devices would connect together, and it will be
much easier to provide support and services. This would mean that the
process would be extremely efficient and cost-effective.
Concentrated networks and personalized
internet. Nowadays all of having a requirement of increased
internet capacity because there is a massive flux of people using the
internet. With 5G, organizers can pay for increased bandwidth thereby
improving people's online experience.
