Remembering Dr APJ Abdul Kalam's contribution to DRDO and ISRO on his 5th death anniversary

On his death anniversary, we have to take a look at his contribution to The Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam (Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam) was born and raised in Rameswaram (Tamil Nadu) and studied physics and aerospace engineering. He was an Indian aerospace scientist as well as the politician who served (2002 to 2007) as the 11th President for his Nation.

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam serves his country for many years. He contributed his major portion of his life in the field of technology and Space for Country. He is also known as The Missile Man of India.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS-

  • Dr. Kalam was a legendary Scientist as well as Teacher and Politician.  
  • He was awarded by several prestigious awards, Padma Bhushan 1981, Padma Vibhushan 1990, and Bharat Ratna 1997 the country's highest civilian honour.

The Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) remembered Dr APJ Abdul Kalam On his 5th death anniversary, popularly known as the Missile Man of India. He was a great humanitarian. He taught various students and achieved milestones as a scientist. 

While delivering a lecture to students at the Indian Institute of Management, Shillong Dr. Kalam passed away on 27 July 2015, aged 83. Thousands, including national-level dignitaries, attended the funeral ceremony held in his hometown of Rameswaram, where he was buried with Full State Honours. He is a source of inspiration for the entire Nation and he is still fondly remembered by the citizens of India.

Dr. Kalam always says, "You have to dream before your dreams can come true."

On his death anniversary, we take a look at his contribution to The Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)-

  1. After graduating from the Madras Institute of Technology Dr. Kalam started his career at the Aeronautical Development Establishment of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in 1960.
  2. He started his career in DRDO by designing a small Hovercraft.
  3. Dr. Kalam had first started work on an expandable rocket project independently at DRDO in 1965.
  4. Kalam later joined The Indian Space Research Organisation ISRO and headed the project India's first Satellite Launch Vehicle(SLV-III), successfully deployed the Rohini-l satellite in near-earth orbit in July 1980.
  5. He supervised the Pokhran-II nuclear tests and served as the Scientific Adviser to Defence Minister and Secretary, Department of Defence Research & Development from 1992 to 1999.
  6. He returned to DRDO after working 19 years at ISRO.
  7. He was intimately involved in developing missiles like Agni and Prithvi under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program (IGMDP).
  8. Dr. Kalam was also a member of the Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR) established by Dr Vikram Sarabhai.

In memory of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam DRDO built the statue in Pei Karumbu, island town of Rameswaram (Tamil Nadu). Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated his statue in July 2017. There is a statue of the leader (Kalam) in the entrance showing him playing the Veena and also two other smaller statues in sitting and standing posture with replicas of rockets and missiles which he had worked with.
